How to Plan the Perfect Jersey Shore Weekend: A Wanderlust Guide

The Jersey Shore has two reputations and deserves one of them. Skip the reality-TV associations and what you find is one of the most genuinely enjoyable coastlines on the East Coast: long barrier-island beaches, seafood that tastes like it was caught that morning, towns with real main streets, and a pace that loosens on you faster than expected.

Here’s how to make a weekend here worth the drive.

Getting There

From New York City, most Shore towns are 90 minutes to two hours by car — closer if you’re coming from Brooklyn or Staten Island. The Garden State Parkway is your artery; avoid Friday afternoon if you can and aim for early Saturday or Thursday evening instead. From Philadelphia, the drive is shorter and the traffic more forgiving.

What to Pack

Beach bag essentials aside, the Shore requires less than you think. One nice outfit for dinner, something warm for evenings on the porch (it gets cooler than expected once the sun drops), and a cooler for market provisions if you’re self-catering. Leave the dress shoes at home.

Where to Eat

Seafood is the obvious priority. Most Shore towns have a spot near the docks that serves fish caught the same day — look for the places without menus on Instagram. Salt-crusted clams, peel-and-eat shrimp, fish tacos that bear no resemblance to the Tex-Mex version. If you want something more formal, the dining scenes in Asbury Park and Cape May have both matured significantly in the last five years.

Building the Itinerary

Don’t over-schedule. The Shore rewards the day that starts late, spends three hours more at the beach than planned, and ends with a long table of seafood and no particular rush. One planned activity per day is usually the right number. Paddle out, take a walk through town, find the bakery.
