Ten miles of undeveloped Atlantic coastline. No boardwalk, no souvenir shops, no noise. Island Beach State Park is what the Jersey Shore looked like before everything else arrived — a long, windswept barrier island where osprey nest in the dunes and the ocean does most of the talking.
The park stretches between Seaside Heights and Barnegat Inlet. Most visitors park near the bathing areas and walk south until the crowds thin out. Go far enough and you’ll find yourself alone with the surf, the sand, and an unbroken horizon — the kind of beach that earns a full day.
Surf fishing is excellent along the inlet, and the birding during spring and autumn migration is among the finest on the East Coast. The osprey nesting platforms along the bay-side road are easy to spot from the car. Summer weekends fill the parking areas fast; the smarter move is an early arrival or a mid-week visit in September, when the water is still warm and the park is yours to share with a handful of other people who knew the same thing.
